![]() It's a brilliantly funny book with an unexpected amount of emotional heft, and I liked it an awful lot. What Scalzi does, somehow, is explore the absurdity of the redshirt trope without making a mockery of the protagonists themselves, despite the fact that, well, t hey're redshirts. As Dahl, Duvall, Hanson and their fellow low-ranking shipmates begin poking further into their disproportionate mortality rate, their tale briskly moves the action forward and keeps your attention well beyond the usual capacity of a pure send-up. ![]() There are dozens of such moments that capture the inspiration and the in-jokes that help build the world of Redshirts – in an interview with GeekDad, Scalzi talked about his approach to the project – and while they're hilarious, they are also surprisingly effective at drawing you into a story that's more than just a spoof. "I’m thinking you should have called bullshit on the ice shark story," Duvall said. "It wasn’t specified at the time," Dahl said, spearing a meat bit on his tray. "Is it a shark made of ice?" Hanson asked. ![]()

Their loving, supportive dynamic is simultaneously realistic and aspirational, and Hibbert’s characterizations, especially her careful handling of Zaf’s anxieties, are masterful. The mutual respect that grows between them is a joy to witness, as Dani realizes that committing to someone doesn’t have to mean giving up on her own dreams. Hibbert doesn’t use this rom-com staple as an easy shortcut to a happily ever after, instead allowing plenty of time for the development of emotions. Which, without wishing to overstate the parallels - not least regarding my future likely lack of memory - is perhaps how I can imagine feeling about The Candy House some years down the line. I just remember enjoying it and thinking it was clever and polished. I read A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan shortly after it came out and liked it a lot one of those books I've certainly recommended to people over the years, even though I rather struggle now to recall exactly what the book was about, its themes and the like. ![]() ![]() ![]() Jon Wiener (born 1944) is an American historian and journalist based in Los Angeles. He is best known for his investigations of power and social class in his native Southern California. Mike Davis (1946–2022) was an American writer, political activist, urban theorist, and historian. The book's purpose is not to present a comprehensive history of 1960s Los Angeles but to dispel the mythology surrounding this era and replace it with the neglected history of the populist social and cultural movements that shifted power away from an entrenched elite and opened up opportunities for radical egalitarian change. The authors combine archival research and personal interviews with their own experiences in the civil rights and anti-war movements to tell the story of this transformative decade. ![]() in the Sixties is a movement history by Mike Davis and Jon Wiener published in April 2020. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lucas established his business in order to manufacture plows and cultivators, and for the repair of farm implements.
